Analytical Studies of Films and Books

In the middle syndicate we watched the movie Matilda from the story written by Roald Dahl then compared Crunchem Hall with our own school. In the senior syndicate we read The Three Billy Goats Gruff, then watched the short film The Toll and compared the two.

Don't Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus

What a fantastic story this is written and illustrated by Mo Willems. Rm 16, one of our New Entrant rooms, had great fun making up their own stories on this app and then drawing their own pigeons. Check them out!

E-Learning in the Library

This term with the seniors and middles we are focusing on individual libary contracts. The students can choose from a range of literacy activities and different presentation models. Several of these include the use of the ipads, laptops and computers. As you can see the children have been very engaged in the research and presentation for these tasks. Keep an eye out for finished products on the blog.

BOOK WEEK AT RICHMOND PRIMARY SCHOOL

Next week is Book Week at Richmond Primary School. The children in the GATERS programme are involved in preparing different activities for the rest of the school.

Casper from Rm 2 has created a quiz for children to enter during the week. See if you know the answers. Casper will put the answers on the blog at the end of the week and you can see how great you were!
Casper has given all the classes the quiz to complete in their own time. Give it a go and maybe you would like to post of comment for Casper to read next week.

DINOSAURS DINOSAURS DINOSAURS

As part of our Rich Topic one of the acivitivies the children have been asked to complete is a Diorama showing what they have learnt so far. Check out these finished ones. Well done to Lily in Room 2.

Book and Movie Comparisons - "The Lost Thing" by Shaun Tan

This term we are looking at books and movies. The senior children have read the story "The Lost Thing by Shaun Tan and have watched the film. This animation won an Oscar this year, beating Pixar, the producers of the Cars movies.

Having compared the book with the movie the children produced a timeline or cartoon strip of the 6-7 main events in this story.

This is a fantastic book to read with a sophisticated message that can be discussed and debated with children. The movie is available on You Tube.

Tasman District Library Quiz

Well done to our four girls who took part in the TDC Library Quiz based on the NZ Post Book Awards. Congratulations on coming third equal overall, for winning the Sensational Survivors section and for winning the Best Dressed competition. Keep up the reading!

Book Week Dress Up Day

We completed our Book Week events with fantastic parade of children dressed up as their favourite book character. Each class chose their favourite to win a book from the library.

Book Week Events

As many of you who are part of our school know we spend two weeks on Book Week activities. This is a lot of fun for the children and also for me. The "Guess Who Ms. Simpson is Dressed Up As" has been a favourite for the past three years and this year was no different. We had a great time combining classes and working with buddies to complete activities based on the New Zealand Post Book Awards. Here is a sample of work from two boys in Room 3 which involved research, note taking, sketching and publishing. What a fantastic effort Jordan and Ryan. The senior syndicate was also involved in researching a farm animal after reading The Moon and Farmer McPhee.

Other children in the middle syndicate completed work based on the story The Life Cycle of a Pukeko. Have a look at their fabulous efforts.

The middle syndicate also read Finnagan and the Pirates and completed several different tasks based on the story.

In the Senior Syndicate much of our time has been taken up participating in our production of The Goldfields based on term work and our school camps to Pinedale in Canvastown. However, we have been focusing on our Habits of Mind while in the library. We have all worked out which habits we are good at and which ones we are not good at. In turn we have chosen a Habit of Mind that we are going to work on throughout the next term. Ms. Thurlow's class have put their Habit of Mind up on the wall along with their photo as a reminder for themselves. Well done Ms. T!
Our Junior Syndicate children have been reading a variety of new books including Where is Miss Nelson, Josephine Wants to Dance, Edward the Emu, The Black Book of Colours and The Penguins Are Coming. We have had great fun completing activities based on these books and have some things displayed on the walls in the library and some in our library books.
The end of Term One for 2011 has come around so fast. Our Middle Syndicate children have been studying Antarctica and we were lucky enough to have a visit from Brian Howell who has been an electrician and engineer in Antarctica. What a great talk with lots of photos and even some rocks from Antarctica. The same bunch of children have also been involved in learning about Chocolate as part of their technology unit. We have carried this on through the library where we completed PMI's about the statement "All children should eat chocolate ate least once a day." What a fantastic response we got to this from Room 7 and all work and photo's are displayed in the library. Some children also completed a flow chart to show the process of how we get the chocolate on our shelves. Well done to Room 9 children who did this so independently!
