In the Senior Syndicate much of our time has been taken up participating in our production of The Goldfields based on term work and our school camps to Pinedale in Canvastown. However, we have been focusing on our Habits of Mind while in the library. We have all worked out which habits we are good at and which ones we are not good at. In turn we have chosen a Habit of Mind that we are going to work on throughout the next term. Ms. Thurlow's class have put their Habit of Mind up on the wall along with their photo as a reminder for themselves. Well done Ms. T!
Our Junior Syndicate children have been reading a variety of new books including Where is Miss Nelson, Josephine Wants to Dance, Edward the Emu, The Black Book of Colours and The Penguins Are Coming. We have had great fun completing activities based on these books and have some things displayed on the walls in the library and some in our library books.
The end of Term One for 2011 has come around so fast. Our Middle Syndicate children have been studying Antarctica and we were lucky enough to have a visit from Brian Howell who has been an electrician and engineer in Antarctica. What a great talk with lots of photos and even some rocks from Antarctica. The same bunch of children have also been involved in learning about Chocolate as part of their technology unit. We have carried this on through the library where we completed PMI's about the statement "All children should eat chocolate ate least once a day." What a fantastic response we got to this from Room 7 and all work and photo's are displayed in the library. Some children also completed a flow chart to show the process of how we get the chocolate on our shelves. Well done to Room 9 children who did this so independently!

Down On The Farm With Junior Classes

At the beginning of Term 2 our junior students' topic was Farm Animals. We went on a farm visit and saw lots of animals including horses, sheep, a pig, dogs, deer and cows. As part of the follow up in the library we read farm animal stories and looked at where animal live and what animals can give us.

Library Lessons

During the library sessions I try to include thinking skills. At the end of term one I posed a question to the middle syndicate about books being better than tv. Here are some of their responses.

Launch into Reading

Getting children and families into reading is one of our main foci for this year. This is the first year we have had a teacher librarian who works specifically in the library teaching children about books.
